How these numbers are made
The weather. Daily maximum temperatures from Chicago O'Hare International Airport (NOAA station USW00094846), from the Global Historical Climatology Network daily summaries. This is the station the National Weather Service uses for the city record.
The colors. Ten fixed bands of 10°F, from below 20°F to 100°F and up, so a color means the same thing in every city. Bands with no days are left off the key.
